A Hearty Meatball Sub That Won’t Offset Your Weight Loss Goals

Biggest Loser chef Devin Alexander loves the taste of Subway’s Meatball Marinara sandwich, but not all of its extra fat and carbs. According to her, the 6-inch version contains a whopping 24 grams of fat and 63 grams of carbs.

She decided to create her own healthier version with homemade, lower-fat meatballs as the star, featuring it in her cookbook, Fast Food Fix. Below, Alexander explains what makes her sub even better than the original.

“If you’re a true meatball lover, the key thing Subway’s sandwich does is make you crave more of their yummy, yummy meatballs. Each 6-inch sandwich contains only 4 tiny meatballs.

Being an East Coast-raised Italian, I take issue with that. We like meat. In fact, we expect meat. So I made my meatballs a bit bigger, while reducing the fat by more than 50 percent.”

Alexander also suggests switching out the usual American cheese with mozzarella if you prefer:

“Though I’ve kept the recipe true to Subway, I always add mozzarella to mine, and I invite you to do the same. Plus, I’ve found some amazingly tasty low-fat mozzarella cheeses.”
